Getting Started

Text START to our number. Guy will ask for your first name and zip code and you're set up. No app, no account creation, no password.

Anything natural. Some examples:

  • [send a photo] — Guy diagnoses the problem and finds a pro
  • "find a plumber"
  • "add Tom's Gutters 847-555-1234, great job, $850"
  • "who did my roof"
  • "is $1,200 fair for gutter cleaning"
  • "create a group called Elmwood Neighborhood"
  • "join ELMWOOD42"
  • "HELP" — reaches a real person

No. Just text naturally. Guy understands plain English. If he doesn't understand something he'll say so and a real person will follow up.

Photo Diagnosis

Just text a photo to Guy's number. No command needed — Guy automatically detects the image and starts a diagnosis. You can send it from your phone's camera or photo library like any MMS.

[Send a photo of the wet spot, cracked pipe, flickering outlet, or anything you're not sure about] Guy: Water damage on ceiling — likely a pipe leak above. Urgency: Act soon Cost: $200–$600 You need: Plumber DIY: Check attic for visible pipe leaks. Want me to find a pro? (yes/no)

Guy's vision AI returns:

  • Problem — What Guy sees and what's likely causing it
  • Urgency level — How quickly you need to act (see urgency levels below)
  • Typical cost range — What this type of repair usually costs in your area
  • DIY option — Whether you can fix it yourself and how
  • Pro category — The type of contractor you need
  • Smart question — Something to ask the pro when they respond

Only with your explicit permission. After the diagnosis, if you ask Guy to find a pro, Guy will ask:

Guy: Would you like me to share your photo with the pro so they can see the issue upfront? (yes/no)

If you say yes — the photo is forwarded via MMS when the job thread starts. The pro sees the issue before they even respond.

If you say no — the photo stays completely private. The search and connection proceed normally, just without the visual context.

Guy never shares a photo without your explicit yes.

The pro receives an MMS with your photo and a brief description of the issue — before they've replied to you. This means:

  • More accurate initial quotes
  • Fewer "can you send me a picture?" back-and-forths
  • The pro knows exactly what tools and parts to bring

Your phone number stays private unless you both opt in to share it directly.

Yes. Unlimited photo diagnoses are included free for all users. There's no limit on how many photos you can send.

Guy can identify most common home problems from a photo, including:

  • Water damage and leaks (ceilings, walls, floors, under sinks)
  • Plumbing issues (pipes, fixtures, drains)
  • Electrical problems (outlets, panels, wiring)
  • HVAC issues (furnaces, AC units, vents)
  • Structural concerns (cracks in foundation, walls, drywall)
  • Roofing and gutter damage
  • Pest damage (wood damage, droppings, entry points)
  • Exterior wear (siding, caulk, deck, paint)

If Guy can't identify the problem from the photo, he'll say so and suggest texting a description or calling a professional directly.

Saving Contractors

Text Guy the contractor's name and phone number after a job. You can include notes, what you paid, and a rating — or just the basics.

"adding Mike's Plumbing 847-555-0011, fixed my water heater, $1,450, would use again"

Just send the name and what they do. Guy will try to find them via a business search. You can always add the number later.

Yes. Text the name and number and note it's for future reference:

"saving Sunrise HVAC 847-555-7722 — recommended by neighbor, haven't used yet"

Yes. Text something like:

"avoid ABC Roofing — ghosted us after taking a deposit"

Guy will flag them as avoid in your catalog.

Finding Contractors

Just describe what you need:

  • "plumber"
  • "who fixed my furnace"
  • "electrician, the cheaper one"
  • "handyman I recommended to Sarah"

Either you haven't saved anyone in that category yet, or nobody in your groups has. In that case Guy will tell you and suggest adding one after your next job.

Yes — by default Guy searches your personal catalog and all your groups. You can narrow it:

"plumber in my church group"
"electrician from my personal list only"

Groups

Text: "create a group called Elmwood Neighborhood"
Guy will generate a join code you share with your neighbors.

Text: "join ELMWOOD42" (replace with your actual code)

Free groups hold up to 15 members. Upgrade to unlimited for $3/month — text "upgrade my group" and Guy will send a payment link.

Yes. You can join as many groups as you want — neighborhood, church, friends, family. Guy searches all of them when you ask for a rec.

Text: "remove [name or number] from my Elmwood group"
Only the group admin can remove members.

Text: "leave Elmwood group" — you'll be removed and your recs will stay in the group attributed to you.

Quote Analysis

Text Guy the amount, what it's for, and any details:

"Tom quoted $850 for gutter cleaning on a 2-story house, is that fair?"

Or send a photo of a written estimate — Guy will read it and analyze it automatically.

Guy compares your quote to anonymized prices paid by other users in your area for similar jobs. The more users in your area the more accurate the comparison.

Guy will tell you there isn't enough local data to compare and give you a general range based on national averages instead.

Communicating With Contractors

Yes. After finding a pro text: "reach out to Tom's Gutters for me" and Guy will send them a message with your job description and ask if they're available.

No — not until you both choose to share numbers. All messages go through Guy as a relay. To share numbers both parties must reply YES to a share request.

Yes. Text: "ask my HVAC guy if he does tankless water heaters" and Guy will relay the question and bring back the answer.

Family Care Mode

It lets an adult child quietly watch over an elderly parent's home contractor activity. The child gets daily digests, quote alerts, and pressure detection notifications. The parent uses Guy normally — they just have extra support behind the scenes.

Text: "set up care mode for my mom" and Guy will walk you through it. Guy sends your parent a one-time confirmation message. They must text YES to opt in and start receiving updates. No messages are sent without their explicit consent.

Yes — at any time by texting STOP CARE.

$9/month billed to the family member setting it up — never to the parent.

How much does Got a Guy cost?

Basic use is free. Optional paid features:

Text "upgrade" and Guy will send you a secure Stripe payment link.

Text "cancel my subscription" and Guy will confirm cancellation. Your access continues until the end of the billing period.

The charge on your statement appears as HIIMGUY.COM. Email help@hiimguy.com within 30 days and we'll sort it out.

Privacy and Data

Only you — unless you join a group, in which case your group members can see the recs you've added to that group. Your personal notes and prices are only visible to you.

Yes. Text: "export my catalog" and Guy will email you a copy of everything you've saved.

Text: "delete my account" — Guy will confirm and your data will be deleted within 30 days.

Troubleshooting

Try rephrasing more simply. If it happens twice in a row Guy will automatically flag it for a real person to follow up.

Text START to reactivate your account. Your catalog and groups are all still there.

Text: "fix info for Tom's Gutters" and Guy will walk you through the correction.
